Microplastics and Seafood: What We Know

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, typically less than 5 millimeters in size, that have become a growing environmental concern worldwide. They originate from the breakdown of larger plastic waste, synthetic fibers from clothing, and microbeads used in some consumer products. Because of their small size, these particles can easily enter rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Marine animals, including fish, shellfish, and other seafood species, may accidentally ingest microplastics while feeding. Researchers have found microplastics in various marine environments and in the digestive systems of some seafood species. Shellfish such as mussels and oysters are often highlighted in studies because they filter large volumes of water and can accumulate particles from their surroundings.

While microplastics have been detected in seafood, scientists are still studying the potential effects on human health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), current evidence suggests that more research is needed to fully understand the long-term health impacts of microplastic exposure through food consumption.

Experts agree that seafood remains an important source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. The nutritional benefits of eating seafood continue to outweigh the known risks associated with microplastics based on current scientific evidence.

Reducing plastic pollution is a shared responsibility. Proper waste management, responsible consumption, recycling efforts, and supporting sustainable seafood practices can help protect marine ecosystems and reduce the amount of plastic entering our oceans.

As research continues, one thing is clear: keeping our waters clean is essential not only for marine life but also for the future of the seafood that reaches our tables.
